Oaks Inn is located in historic Gonzales, the "Birthplace
of Texas Independence."
If you are
interested in Texas history, Gonzales is a wonderful
destination. Throughout the town and the surrounding
countryside are dozens of historically significant
locations, many marked by historical markers. Here is a
short list of some of them:
- The
monument, near the banks of the Guadalupe River, to
the "Old Eighteen," the men who refused to turn over
the town's cannon to the Mexican Army.
- The
monument at Cost depicting the first shot fired in
the Texas Revolution.
- The
monument and reflecting pool, at the Gonzales
Memorial Museum, honoring the "Immortal Thirty-Two,"
the only men to reinforce the Alamo.
- The
bronze sculpture in "Texas Heroes Square" honoring
the heroes in the fight for Texas independence.
-
"Pioneer Village," a collection of historic
structures located north of town near the remains of
an earthen Confederate fort.
- And
dozens of historic buildings and homes.
Along with
local historic attractions, Gonzales is known for its
many antique shops, most only blocks away from Belle
Oaks Inn.
